I'd like to chime in about the costs of getting started and where you're going to buy your traffic.
First thing you need to know is where you stand in the world of sites ( you probably know this but hey... it's a forum board)
You need to know the basics about what's going to convert for your brand.
Balling on a budget? get some cheap expired domain traffic (generally available and dirt cheap) - It'll give you some better stats as far as bounce rates and visitors but isn't likely to be among your best converting traffic.
I've already read through the post about the Rolodex mentioned above ( There's value there as well )
But the other thing you have to take into consideration is the resale of the traffic after you've hopefully got some sales or signups out of it.
Traffic can be looked at like a crap shoot if you don't know where or what you're buying.
The only reason i mentioned the expired domain traffic is because most new site owners are operating on a budget so don't shoot the messenger folks!

Attention: "role based name" email prefixes such as support, webmaster, info, contact, forum, service, affiliate, admin, traffic, partners, marketing, etc., for our member accounts are not permitted. They are acceptable for a vendor listing, but not for the member email. This is due to bulk email processors scrubbing them for delivery due to extremely high bounce rates. If we discover you signed up with a role based name we will give you only one message to change it. After 3 days your account will be removed if the email is not changed.
