CHIPMAKER AMD is releasing a cheap PC, which it designed for third world countries, in the US.

The computer, which will sell in Radio Shack for $299, was designed for poor countries whose residents would not be able to get a computer.

AMD first launched the Personal Internet Communicator, in India nearly a year ago. The PIC is the size of a lunch box and weighs three pounds. It has a Geode processor, no fan, USB ports, a hard disk drive, and headphone/microphone jack, mouse, keyboard, but not a monitor.

Run on the Windows CE, the PIC also comes preinstalled with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and PowerPoint, Macromedia’s Flash Player, and SoftMaker’s word processing and spreadsheet programs.

The outfit plans to release the computer to China and Turkey in the next few months as part of its bid to get the world connected to the World Wide Wibbly Web. Blighty is obviously too developed for its attentions.
