Copying music from a CD to a home computer could be made legal under new proposals from the UK government.
Millions of people already "rip" discs to their computers and move the files to MP3 players, although the process is technically against copyright law.

This is a load of unworkable rubbish, how are you supposed to back up your data if you you are not allowedto burn it to disk? it is a restriction of your rights.

Precisely my thoughts, I wonder if they will send copyright police to every home to come and see whether people are backing up or copying entertainment CD

The point is Temi, that if i buy a DIGITAL copy of something, then I should be able to do with it what I want, IE play it on an MP3 player, or laptop or desktop etc. Fair enough they can argue that I am not allowed to make a CD from it by changing it back to normal music format, but saying I can not copy tit to a cd means that I MUST be able to download it again and again FOR FREE other wise If I have a hard drive failure I am going to have to pay for my ENTIRE COLLECTION again, simply because they will not allow me to back it up. Change your computer? Pay again!

Do you see what I am saying now?

Yes OWG, I see your point. I really think, if you buy a download file, be it music or software, you should be able to store it in any format you like and use it however you like as long as its for your own personal single us and not making copies for your friends or flogging it at car boot sales.
So if you need to burn it to CD/DVD I think its okay, like you pointed out, all the download link usually expires, you can not go back there a year or so later to download the files you have legally paid for.

But if they are preventing you from storing them digitally then they are selling goods that are not fit for the purpose for which they are intended ;)

You are quite right, they will be selling goods that is not fit for purpose.... what is really happening is that they are losing a lot of money to people sharing files illegally and they are trying to recoup lost revenue from people who buy legal downloads.

Same old story though Temi. the CSA don't go after parents who just run off and refuse to work, they go after decent people. The police don't go after criminal scum from chavland who are on the dole, sell some Charlie as a bonus, do smack and go on the rob at night. They don't go after chavo boy as they know he will refuse to pay the fine choosing to go to jail to pay it off. SO they go after the motorists instead, easy meat, decent people who will pay their fines.

It is the way of life of this governement, take on the easy targets..
