Does anyone know of a free or low cost, decent, directory software bundle and/or Content Management System?

Thanks,

Ken

Ah, now it's clearer.

If you can, please disregard my ignorance in my response.

Ken

I have used phpMydirectory. It is a great script.
It is not a free script though.

PHPMydirectory costs $99. It is a fantastic script for a portal whereby the memebrs do not have websites, or where there is a combination of the two. It really is a class act, but it needs tweaking to make it search engine friendly. I have altered my instances of it to suit.

How search engine friendly is Esyndicat?

OK a week ago, I released my Esyndicat based rugby directory to the world. It is in a subfolder of my rugby forum. A week ago I had 17,000 pages indexed by google (the forum pages), today I have 110,000 which is the directory pages :D NOW tell me which is the best script ;)

Here is the cost breakdown for PHP Link Directory 3.0: $25 if you link back to them from the footer of your directory, $75 if you are not going to link back to them and $10 to access the support forum.

Esyndicat seem to have made Google visit your rugby site more, I think I will check it out too, I must confess I am hearing of it for the first time.

I am using phpmydirectory, I love it too.
I have never tried esyndicator. I will check it out and see.

I paid £145 (it might have been dollars though) for an unlimited licence of esyndicat. I also bought an unlimited licence of phpmydirectory, but after I pad the $499 within a month or so they changed it from my having an unlimited licence, to only having 10 licences. For this reason alone, I backed well away from them. I still use the script, and I still post in the forums on web marketing, but It has left a bad taste in my mouth because yof what they did.

TEMI,

it wasn't that google visited more often, they just found the link to the esyndicat directory, and deep crawled all 90,000 or more pages within 24hours :D

Thanks for that info OWG,
If you ever want to combine efforts to get a directory script created, I am game, at least we will own the software and set our own licensing terms

esyndicat is a nice script and generally a whole lot better than the sitesift scripts and free php link directories that are around, just try submitting to them you'll instantly notice the difference. I've also used an older version of phpld version2 I think, works nicely and installs really easily.

phpmydirectory slightly different type of script, supposedly for 'yellow pages' style sites but unless you have it almost rewritten like I had to, it will struggle with more than 20,000 listings; which ain't anywhere close to yellow pages size. But you can modify the templates and code mods quite easily withit, so who knows it may get better. As OWG stated before they changed their licensing aggreements of late which is a real pain when you got about 20 sites and had to buy separate licences, all about generating cash eh?

Cheers,

Dave

Like I suggested to OWG, if one pull resources together, we can get our own script created for us for about £1,000 or less (giving the current strength of pounds) instead of enriching other webmaster one can keep most of the proceeds to one self, for one, you can install your own script on as many sites as you like and proceeds from selling it can be shared within the owners of the script. I will discuss this privately with OWG if he is game I am willing to contribute about £500 to creating a web directory.
Other interesting parties should register their interest and we will see if we can get it off the ground

I've thought about this as well and contacted a few developers. What kind of script you aiming for a link directory like esyndicat or a business directory like PMD?

Cheers,

Dave

The script I plan to code is not modelled after either of the two examples you gave, its will be more advanced than both. It will take good features from all popular web directories currently on the net and add a few features I know I need from using directory scripts for many years.

I have actually posted a project for this script here: getacoder.com/projects/advance_web_directory_script_32947.html , I have not selected a programmer yet. The average bid on the project so far is about $2,500 .... I will pay for it but if I find other webmasters who are willing to come on the project to pay for part of it in return for part ownership of the script that will be excellent.

Hi Temi,

Over the last six months or so I have been working closely with a couple of developers with the aim of writing a script for business directories like rightplacetoeat.com or justkidshoes.com which I built with PMD and modded a little, okay a lot. But the price has been much higher than what you've been quoted.

Then there's the issue of tech support and security strength of the script written, if you have a full list of features required I'm more than happy to add some to it and make some enquiries with the developers I use. They're pretty hot on the PHP front.

Cheers,

Dave

Since you have gone that far I think you should continue, adding my feature list to your project will make your project something else rather than what you want it to be. Good luck with your script

No Worries Temi,

I'll keep you informed of how things are going, maybe it'll be of use for some of your future projects?

Cheers,

Dave
