I wonder if Page Rank affect SERPS in anyway, I was at another forum someone suggesting that SERP are directly affected by PR, i personally don't think so.
In my opinion it does affect the ranking directly improving the importance of your website. For instance generally I launch new website with new domain and I suffer from the different filters. When the real PR of my site increase the hindern will subside.
Or examine the supplemental results. The PR increase may remove the supplemental flag from those pages and give possibilities to come up as organic results.
As Bagi said, Pr does influence the ranking, but there is absolutely no direct correlation between PR & position in the SERPS IE a higher PR will push you up.
Conversely of course, it is impossible to gain PR without links, and links WILL push you up the Serps for the anchor text, links will pull you into better neighbourhoods, links will help theme your site. so links affect the Pr AND the SERP's position.
So what you two gentlemen are saying is that whilst PR does not directly influence SERP it does have some effect on it because of the relationship between the source of PR (Backlinks) and what pushes up your SERP results (anchor text and links) ?
Yep, it is cause and effect. Many people think it is the Pr doing the job but it isn't. The PR is simply a by product of the links.
PR IS important to stay out of the Supplemental index, and to get your pages spidered though. it is an indication of importance, and Google does not return pages in order of importance, it returns them in order of relevance.
