I tend to stick to brand names, but even brand names produce rubbish defective products at times. I tend to try and find a few favorable consumer reviews first to see if there have been any problems with that particular model.
When I went to buy my PC at the end of 2006 the one I really wanted was out of stock. I then didn't have enough to get something equivalent so I had to go down a peg or two for the Ei System. I suppose I could have waited for the brand PC to get into stock but I didn't want to wait. Btw...it was a Compaq.
Usually brand name companies provide better support.
I build all my desktops from parts so there is no brand name attached to it but if I have to buy pre-made system I would definitely choose known brand.
