One of the most expensive soap scenes ever filmed will see EastEnders characters Ian Beale and Phil Mitchell fight for their sons' lives as they become trapped in a car underwater. The sequence – which will be screened on May 17 – begins with Phil (Steve McFadden) crashing his Range Rover in a country lane on the way back from a fathers-and-sons trip with old sparring partner, Ian (Adam Woodyatt).
But while he escapes the wreckage and helps Ian to safety, his 4x4 slips down a muddy slope into a lake, where it rapidly fills with water – trapping Ian’s son Peter and Phil's son, Ben. "Ben and Peter's lives are left in the balance," an EastEnders insider told the Sunday Mirror. "Viewers have to wait and see if either makes it. This will be the biggest cliffhanger since the hunt for who shot Phil. "Ian is in agony with injuries to his arms and legs so he can only sit and watch helplessly as Phil battles against time to get to the boys." The stunt, which has already been shot, is believed to have cost around £1 to film.
