Ebook to bring traffic

Hi,

I have no contact database. So, would it be a good idea to offer a free book on forums, send emails to friends for them to pass it on and post in torrent engines, etc to get people to then visit my site and leave their contact details?

On another site I was told that an ebook brings people to the site but does not convert them.

I wonder if i should be more specific with my question.

If you had a 45,000 word ebook, but no contact database, would you use the book to build a database by offering in the book another free ebook at your website where you would also request contact details before download.

Or, what other better method would you employ?

If the eBook is useful, people will part with their email addresses to download it. But that doesn't mean they'll return to buy anything necessarily. It depends on the quality of the eBook, for one thing: If it is of high quality, that will help your online reputation and branding, and in that case it's not a bad method.

If it's the same old, same old or otherwise of poor quality, don't bother: It will just flag you as a crap dealer.

That may be the best piece of advice that I've received in a very long time, Minstrel. A very different perspective than the usual IM stuff you read.

Thanks for the reply. When you say "Dealer", what do you mean by that exactly, or are you just referring generically?

The book is good and I have someone editing it at the moment who believes it to be good too. Although they may be a little bias, they would also be honest if it really was bad.

Free or not, if the whole point is to build an email list, you want them to enter the email address prior to downloading the ebook. Otherwise, the likelihood of them returning and later leaving an email address is slim.

Thanks for your reply. I hope to entice them with a few offers, etc in the book to come to the site.

However, as I get replies I am starting to define the question better. So, how about this:

What is the best and quickest method for getting a book onto as many pc's as possible? And I would prefer FREE methods, if possible

I'm not sure that I understand what you are trying to do, but unless you have permission from someone to send it to their email (where they can download it "onto" their PC, you will be guilty of spam. And nobody likes that.

Perhaps the question should be:

What is the best and quickest method for getting someone to opt-in to a mailing list and give up their email address? Then, I can send them my book, which will entice them to visit my website?

Is that an accurate statement of your goal?

(unless you are selling this ebook - that's a different story altogether, but reading through this thread, I don't think that's your plan.)

as i understand everybody who want to download your book shouls enter the email, but as for me i never enter my main email in such situations coz iam afraid of spam(
or you dont care of it and you just need to create a database?

I wonder if there is a way to make it available to people through any medium without them even needing to visit my site. But, in the book entice them to visit the site through other offers at which point I can ask for an email. I imagine it would be easier to just get it out there for free without anyone needing to visit my site, which nobody would know about for a long time yet. But, with a good ebook and the offer of other good stuff it should create enough interest and desire.

As I mentioned, I don't have a list to send to yet :-(

I have a great landing page, a great ebook, loads of content ready to add to a site. I can produce other books on related subjects and videos and audios all really easily.

However, don't have much of a list. I like what you all stated, but wonder if there a good way to get this book out there for free without needing a list or email addresses. I would then use the links in the book to draw them to my site with other "amazing" offers. I just need to get the book in font of as many people and on as many pcs as possible beforehand, first, to then build the list. I think lol :-D

How would you experts suggest all us newbies out here get around that?

I'm off to get more coffee. This conundrum really is driving me mad

try publishing an article to presell the ebook and then give the ebook away for free to get them to your product. just a thought
