Facebook spammer fined $1 billion - no joke

MONTREAL ? A Montreal man who sent more than four million spam e-mails to Facebook users over a two-month period was ordered to pay the social media giant more than $1 billion in compensation.

It's too bad he'll get out of paying, but on the other hand, it's nice to know that sometimes they get caught.

Although the Sept. 28 ruling by Quebec Superior Court closed Facebook's civil case against Montreal's Adam Guerbuez, the spammer has said he doesn't intend to pay a cent of the fine. He's declared bankruptcy, he told the Canadian Press Tuesday.
Guerbuez didn't return messages seeking comment, but on his blog, he seems pleased with the publicity that the case has brought. He's looking for book or movie deals, and on Wednesday said he was happy to see Internet commentators expressing support for him following "the most ridiculous billion dollar judgment ever."

And Facebook is continuing their pursuit. Even if he does land that book deal, chances are he won't be allowed to profit from it.

Absolutely! He made a ton of money by lying and cheating so I'm thrilled that he's gonna have to pay. Especially because he's using the publicity from this behavior to try to make MORE money by making a movie or writing a book. Its disgusting.

Wow! I'm glad he was punished but I think the payment they're asking for is waaaay too high. Were they trying to make an example or what?

The guy looks pretty rich in that photo..I think he made a lot of money after sending that spam. I wonder how he went bankrupt...
