You should experiment with some links, I think they would help a lot.
If you pick a keyword or phrase that's a few months old and has a pretty stable position in Google and just build some links to it. Can be blog posts or replies, forums, anything that's relevant. If you can get 10 to 15 dofollow links to a low comp keyword you'll see some movement in the serps. They definitely work.
You might find that hiring someone to build a good quality backlink profile for the site can pay for itself further down the line.

If it's any use I just started a journey thread where I'm driving traffic to a site using only social media. I'm curious to see just how much volume I can squeeze out of it. HERE
