Holy crap, I'm in dmoz

I simply can't believe it. I wonder when it happened because I only applied about 8 or 9 months ago.

Um, thanx?

Sorry Paul, I have no idea what any of that meant and I'm embarassed to admit it.

You can now start building new sites, money-making ones, which you can slowly (And I MEAN SLOWLY) link to.

What you do now is, find about hundred or so (More if you please) topics, which relate to your mother ship's main theme. Once you've done this, search for affiliate programs, through reputable networks, to build those money making sites around. Host those mini-sites on multiple servers. Make the sites quickly, but don't link to them quickly. Maybe one per quarter/6 months.

There you have it, in three years you can quit your day job.

I expect my cut of all future proceeds.

30%?

Congrats Duke,
That is DMOZ for you, you are listed just after you have forgoten about submitting your site.

The good thing is that you will appear in Google directory and all those DMOZ clone directories within a few months free of charge :)

Congratulations duke :toast:

How long had your site been running when you submitted?

Thanks for the info here guys, very helpful!

Paul, I'm not sure about the 30% but, if I can actually quit my dayjob at that time I'll maybe pay for your ticket and take you skiing at Whistler/Blackholm, or boarding if you prefer.

To be honest with you all, I submitted my site about two or three months after going online. I made sure that I had as much new content on the main page as possible, Family Friendly status, as many "like-minded" link partners as possible, and helpful content in my forums. Whether or not this is the reason I ever got listed, I'll never know.

I also posted a few stupid questions in the dmoz forums asking God only knows what, only to feel like an idiot. During this time, I was trying to get listed in as many reputable directories as possible such as Gimpsy, All Links, Family Friendly, Orange Pages, etc. I'm not really sure why I got listed but I've been pretty lucky with all of my listings to date. Many of the directories had me listed in under a few days, some that day, and a few even created a new category for me, it was all truly great!

I used to check my backlinks regularily but gave it up as Google started listing them stupidly and putting posts where my site was mentioned ahead of actual link exchange partners with good PR. The funny thing is, I noticed that I was listed in all these obscure directories I'd never heard of, many not even English language directories. A few of them had ODP mentioned somewhere so I may have actually been in dmoz for the last several months rather than just a recent addition.

Sorry, none of this makes any sense, it's just what seemed to work for me.

Actually, here's my one and only post at dmoz, stupid huh?

Actual post

I'm the newest member to this busy community and just thought I'd say hi.

I've been reading many of the posts and site information but didn't see anything mentioning whether or not we are allowed to request reciprocal link exchanges with other member websites. If it's a problem then I apologize for this seemingly ignorant post.

[reciprocal request details removed by moderator -- in answer to your question above, no, this is not the place to be asking for reciprocal links with other sites]

Sincerely,

ken

This forum is only for questions concerning ODP aka DMOZ.

If you are looking for forums about website promotion I advice to look at http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/...ats_and_Forums/

Duke, DMOZ is a TOOL! Treat tools like TOOLS.

OK, what do you do (Tool question) with a power wedge?

BTW, why not submit yourself as an editor to the THOUSANDS of, "NO EDITOR" categories?

Hmmmmm...

You may find what a dumb f'ing tool that directory is, my friend, but use it while it still works, as its days are numbered.

BTW, I have over 1000 posts at that forum, and you'll never, never know which moniker I go under.

Heh Heh...

I actually thought about becoming an editor there but fortunately it passed quickly.

Why didn't you? There are hundreds, if not thousands of categories, which have no editor. If you can prove your unbias for about 6 months wink wink, you can add your sites at will. Make sure they're relevant to the category.

Why wait 8-9 months for an editor to review your site, when you can have it listed at the top within 8-9 seconds?

I thought becoming a DMOZ editor only gave you privaledges to add sites from a pre-determined category within the directory. As far as I know, you're not able to always get what you want because someones already editing that category. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last.

Something tells me that if I got busted for getting my own sites in there quickly that I'd really suffer the consequences though for any future listings. It's not worth taking the chance to me really not to mention I don't think I'd be able to commit too much time to editing anyway.

Lastly, the way I look at it is that I'm confident, happy and believe in what I'm doing online with my sites. It's my opinion that if a directory such as dmoz doesn't list me for whatever reason, then it's really their problem and not mine. I really believe that my sites will surpass my expectations (hell they already have) and flourish as time goes on. This may sound ignorant in nature, but I do believe it.

Let the heckling begin.

lol, I'm dying to see Pauls response actually, he likes being an arse sometimes which is why I'm curious because I too enjoy being an arse.

There are those who lead. There are those who follow.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.

You can try to show Duke some slick tricks of the trade, but he's too, "nice" to follow through, and start making some serious, "jack".

Actually Paul, I do take your suggestions to heart and will use much of what you said, believe it or not.

I got a site in dmoz, took about 1 month.

What that was fast NC7, the category you submited your site to must have had an editor when your site was submited
