I have been in business for many many years, and worked in marketing businesses long before the web became mainstream. I really got online with work in about 96/97 when the Uk was just waking up.

In 1999 I knew nothing about making websites, nor did I know anything about the internet except how to check my e-mail, surf and play a few games.

Ah but I am OLD lol.

in 1980 I spent a little under £100 on a ZX80 1k supercomputer I have pretty much played with them ever since, although I am not a techie by any stretch of the imagination. I just saw the web for what it is, the best marketing tool ever invented. Imagine selling a newspaper, and then being able to see who is looking at what page, and which articles are not being read, and which of your advertisment images are looked at the most. That is what the web does, and the moment I found that out I knew the web would eventually give me my income.

Hmmm, about 2001 (ish) and mostly by accident. I got fed up repeating myself on message boards and figured it was easier to just point at a page and say, 'read that'. Having said that, I was trained as a programmer way back in the mid-eighties when a Sinclair Spectrum was as high-tech as a home computer got and the internet was really a bunch of bulletin boards strung together.

Heh! A zx81! I remember those too, OWG. Three hours typing in a program in BASIC just to watch a letter 'J' hook a letter 'O' from a row of dots pretending to be an ocean. The good old days.

I do not like calling it, "work".

I don't know how others view Paul but I see him the same way as you do. The guy makes me laf and frustrates me at the same time (really a compliment Paul).

It takes a while to get him to actually post coherent sentence structure that I can understand and advice that is not in code, but once you get him to do it, it's advice weighed in gold.

The above post was meant to be a compliment Paul. Unfortunately, I'm crippled by a inner limitation / character flaw that makes many of my compliments "backhanded".

I notice this thread is becoming of topic. So i'll bring it back on track...

I've been a 'webmaster' Since January of this year. I'm pretty good with XHTML and not bad with CSS. I'm currently geeting my hands dirty with Javascript and I've been having a poke at PHP & MySQL recently but can't find the time.

I got motivated when I wanted to build a site about a hobby of mine and then I realised that it was what I wanted to do forever....

Yep Seb, once you get the bug it bites. I am the same with marketing. There is nothing like the buzz you get when you start with nothing, formulate a concept, then build the revenue stream into it, the buzz is amazing (for me anyhow) It is like creating money from nothing other than a dream.

You then get the physical buzz, as you see your advertisers getting enquiries and you kow that you are helping their businesses. For me the buzz of seeing other peoples business grow is a real turn on. Of course, seeing their business grow also ensures that nmy own grows as well.
