Before the Conference:

3. If possible, schedule meetings in advance with key people.

During the Conference:

1. Be proactive: Initiate conversations and seek out new connections. Remember, everyone is there for the same reason — networking.
2. Attend informal events: Evening gatherings or lunches allow you to network in a relaxed setting, often leading to deeper connections.
3. Be an active listener: Pay attention to speakers and ask questions. This will draw attention to you and show your interest.

Those are great tips, many of which I don't think people consider in advance.

Conferences are terrific for networking, making new friends and finding good business opportunities but getting a clear goal and a good idea of how you want to make the most of your attendance and how you want to be perceived can optimize the experience.
