What do you guys think,

can google be anti link buying if they promote it full on. I mentioned on DP that GOOGLE proactively sells links on their site via Adwords and constantly purchase links on different sites via Adsense

If they are against link selling, they must be the biggest hypocrites

..

But Google adwords ads are not spidered and don't count as backlinks.

This is a massively debatable subject isn't it. The question is when does an advert become a bought link. The google way is that all bought links should be nofollow'ed (like that is ever going to happen). a year or two ago I spoke to google reps at SES and their response was that Google can pretty much identify run of the mill bought links, and discount them from the algo. They look for blocks of links with the word sponsored links etc close by.

Google are pretty much against buying backlinks, as they say not to get involved in any scheme designed to increase your PR.

I would say that if your buying links, then buy them from on topic sites, as they will count for more, and stand less chance of being discounted..

I didn't know that, thanks for that bit of imprtant info, I'll have to quickly scan my sites.

You need to remove any reference to sponsors, affiliate, recommended, supporters and other such phrases that indicate paid links.

What about the page with advertising, if Google detects pages such advertisng.html can it penalize a site? What do you reckon?

..

I have such page here and a page that is actually called advertising.html on another site, I have not noticed any penalties on those pages

There is no penalty at all for it. This is a common confusion. I know it is semantics but it is important.

A penalty is something that takes something away from a page or site. ie the starting point is zero a penalty would put this page in a negative situation before it begins to score points for good content, good inbounds etc.

A filter, is an algorithm that removes elements from the equasion. So in this case, if google sses a load of external links bunched together on a page, and finds any content that might suggest paid links, then it simply removes that element from the algo for that page.

Size and position of text, relevance of link, are also factors for distinguishing paid links.

So use CSS to size, CSS to position them at the foot of the page, and images to label them as sponsors :D (OWG takes his grey hat off and puts his white one back on) LOL

oldwelshi, you sound like an inside man

..
LOL no not at all. I have been around a lot longer than google, and thanks to the friends I have, I often get invited to after parties at Search Engine conferences. So get to speak to people from the companies in private. Here is the thing you see. The search engine conferences are great during the day. but it is at NIGHT that you learn ;) Alcohol is a wonderful encourager :D

After parties, If I am not mistaking Google headquarters are in Ireland, are you talking about those type of parties .. If yes you are mixing in the right crowd, but take away the booze from them GIGS
