**added (in afterthought)>Perhaps a partial explanation of the boom in domains and parked pages is the New gTLDs. I have bought quite a few short 3 to 5 letter domains in the new gTLDs. I am sure others have too. Will the Internet explode onto web 3.0 soon I really don't know -- but it is possible.

Total number of Websites - Internet Live StatsBy "Website" we mean unique hostname (a name which can be resolved, using a name server, into an IP Address).
It must be noted that around 75% of websites today are not active, but parked domains or similar. [1]
