The much hoped for pre-Christmas rush to the High Street may be yet to materialise, according to national shopping figures from Experian. The final weekend before Christmas saw High Street footfall down by 8.7% compared with last year.
Footfall for the week starting 15 December is down by between 10% and 15% and is on course to be the worst week of the pre-Christmas period.
Retailers had hoped for better footfall to boost sales.
The figures for 20 and 21 December were a slight improvement on the previous weekend's footfall, which was down 9.4% on last year.
The figures are bad news for struggling retailers, many of which are struggling to survive.
