There seem to be two divides in the scripting language used by web programmers on the web. Independent webmasters seem to use PHP while ASP.NET is the more popular language in the corporate environment. What scripting language do you use and do you use it for your employer or are you an independent web developer?

Always PHP.
Don't get me wrong, ASP.NET isn't bad, it's just that I had alwayes used PHP.

I learn both at University but never programm professionaly with either, when I used to mess about with ASP, i found out that there are lots of resources for ASP, much more than PHP (In those days anyway).

I agree that independent webmasters seem to use ASP.NET less than Corporations, but PHP-use is quite high in Corporations also. You have to remember that a lot of Corporations are tied to Windows so using ASP.NET is a no-brainer to them.

Plus Linux hosting is cheaper than Windows hosting generally. :D

EDIT: My choice is neither by the way, both are as good as each other I think.

Let us see this from another point of view: if you start learning, and you cannot afford a versatile web host, what you will learn? PHP or ASP?

For instance, I tried to find a reliable web host in my country.
The first one was relatively cheap, was fast, but offered only 5 MB (in 2006).
The second one had cPanel and was extremely cheap, but incredible slow.
The third one’s technical support was not able to make my CodePage 1250 pages to look good.

The fourth one, which is the one I have right now, has no cPanel or advanced features, but has a nice technical support and reasonable limits for traffic and space. It was the best for me so far … except they offer only PHP. No PERL, no ASP, no Python. Just PHP.

Like Adam, who made a choice when selected Eve as his wife, I realized that an existing PHP on a reliable host is more affordable for me than a non-existing ASP, no matter what features ASP might have over PHP.
