I'm looking for some advice (maybe a point in the right direction) on information to get in the top A-J of the Google maps when you type in "birmingham web design". Is it to do with back links or page rank?
First of all you need to add your site/business to Google Maps; to add your business is very easy, all you need is a Google account and to follow the instructions found at http://maps.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=7039 .
After the above your business will be on the map ... but sure that not on the top of the 'Local Business List'
The second part of your requirement is exactly what you mean on your question: 'back links', but not just back links ...; you also need to optimize your website, you need to make sure that your site is clean without dead links and without SE tricks ... etc.
So you need to do a little bit of search engine marketing. If you need good results in a short time, I suggest for you to contact a SEO expert; if you need a recommendation please click here to PM one of our forums member.

Attention: "role based name" email prefixes such as support, webmaster, info, contact, forum, service, affiliate, admin, traffic, partners, marketing, etc., for our member accounts are not permitted. They are acceptable for a vendor listing, but not for the member email. This is due to bulk email processors scrubbing them for delivery due to extremely high bounce rates.
