R.I.P Floppy Disk

temi said:
Looks like floppy disk is on its way out of future computers, some manufacturers have stopped including it in computers, read more about this story here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2905953.stm

Tell me about it. Its a right pain the arse! The first thing we do when we get a Dell is ghost it, and the easiest way to do that is with a floppy disk!

They've also done away with ps2 ports.

cellardor,
But you can easily Ghost or image a computer without using floppy, you can use one of those memory sticks, the serve the same purpose as floppy but have a much higher capacity that floppy so I don't think you will miss floppy if its fazed out.

I'm floppy but only if the waters too cold

I'll actually miss floppies because I do use mine from time to time. Usually for storing document files that I don't want to lose (weblogins, resume). I have two of them though so I should be ok for the next thousand years.

But won't you agree that floppy disk are a bit redundant this days? I cannot remember the last time I use one.

I have a memory stick that can hold 128 MB of data and server all the purpose a floppy servers. Is also not as volatile as a floppy disk.

I think this is just one the gradual evolution of PC I remember the day of 5" floppy disk, that was quietly eased out of PC and I do not hear that many people crying out for it today.

I think we will all lean to live without 3" floppy just like we learnt to live without its 5" predecessor :)

I agree temi, I'm just a bit sentiMENTAL. Heavy on the last part.

I rarely use it too, in fact, maybe once a year, tops.

I only use floppys. In fact, our entire Quickbooks program is backed up via a floppy. :panic: No kidding!

Anyone know how to save files on a CD?

I have all of the equipment, just haven't gotten around to doing what appears to be a simple task.

Thanks

Paul

Paul,
Saving on CD is very easy, what I usually do is just right click on the file I want to save, in the pop up menu that show there is an option so "Send to CD" just select that, ensure you have a blank CD in the CDR of course and that is all.

But if you want to do some serious CD burning then you need a software such as Nero.

Most CD always come with one CD writing software or the other
Temi

If you have Windows XP then you have all the software you'll ever need to burn CD's. You cannot add to a CD with files on it already with CD's and CDR's. I think you have to re-formatt to add any new info to a previously burned CD. I have to burn some on a CDRW tonight so I guess I'm going to find out for sure.

I've saved a file on a blank CD (Brand new). Now, I'm at the, "CD Writing wizard" and I can't proceed. I'm getting a, "These is no disk in the drive" (UMMMM, yes THERE IS YOU POS) and, "Please insert a writable CD into drive E:\".

It then goes on to define, "writable"

Uhhhgggg... :bang:

I think some CD needs to be formated before its usable, read the instruction that comes with your CD writer

Can you post a screenshot because you're having way too much trouble it sounds like to me.

- What CD are you writing too, CDR or CDRW?
- Is the file bigger than the allotted storage capacity of the disk?

You should be able to have two explorer windows open. One window with the file to be written, the other with the empty Disk drive selected. Drag and drop the file from your hard drive to the external disk window. Select "write files to CD" and you shoud be done.

You should not have to re-format or pre-format a disk prior to burning unless it already has files on it. If theres files already there then you can't write to it no matter what you do unless it's a CDRW. Once you record something on a CDR, it gets published at the end of the recording process and cannot accept new data, ever.

How old is your CD writer? Is it possible that it can't read the file that your trying to save?

Have you tried a re-start? When all else fails a re-start usually helps.

Sorry about the dumb questions but I've never heard of this problem. If you have Windows XP then you also have Windows Media Player and all the drivers that go with it. You should not be having a problem.

Also, are you drivers updated, is windows updated, etc.?

You may want to try burning a test CD with a different file formatt. Maybe the problem isn't the disk, it's the file. Also, is the file copy protected somehow?

You are very kind with your help, and I truly appreciate that.

I'll be up at 5-5:30 A.M. Monday, and I'll try again, after, "REBOOT".

Thank You

Paul

Hope it works man :!:

We had a similar problem at work just recently and all it took was a defrag and updated drivers.

Almost forgot, we were using disks with a black bottom and the writer hated them. Not sure why.
