RSS malfunction

Can someone explain RSS to me? Whenever I click on an RSS icon to subscribe to something I always get a very long html page. What am I suppose to do with this?

Copy the address of the feed. Add to Google Reader with the red Subscribe button. Then you can organize and read all the feeds in Reader to stay on top of topics you need to follow.

Example here is just a very small part of my Reader, mainly showing some of the search engine news I read daily to try to stay on top of things.

But it should do that automatically if your computer is correctly configured. What browser are you using?
