Tracking USPS package without tracking number.?

I shipped a package from California to Florida around 8-9 days back through USPS. but at the time forgot to take a tracking number. now the receiver in Florida is saying that the package has not been delivered and that he wants the money back.
Is there anyway i can track whether the item is delivered or not without the tracking number?

Did you send it regular mail? If so, I don't think it's possible to track it. It wouldn't be with Canada Post, anyway. (I'm Canadian)

I went few days ago to a USPS center and a customer had the same problem (he sent $5000 with no tracking....) the associate said if he didn't request tracking there is no way to check what happen with that mail.
