Did these two operating systems meld together somehow ? You dont see much of unix anymore.

I think its a case of Linux is based on Unix and Linux has more friendly user interfaces for it so has become the OS of choice for servers and also desktops for some people who are more technically able.

There are also several other operating systems that have their roots in Unix, including Apple's OSX
 
FreeBSD is made using Unix too. And they are many more. OpenBSD advertise for example that this is the only operating system with a single remote hole in 8 years. It is true though that Linux is more widely used, but is not because the friendly interface. OpenBSD looks cool too, it uses KDE, it looks almost like Fedora.
