I always think that we are not giving google trends its due respect. However, an in-depth kind trending keywords ( with reference to the previous years) is possible by simple hit and try method. Through this practice you can come up with the keywords which are going to be trendy in a few months or so. For a better understanding lets show you an example;
I run a sports website, and want to attract the interested audience. SPORTS FESTIVAL is a keywords which is going to play really well in the month of JUNE ( see the attached trend). So I can plan to incorporate this keyword in my website in its trendy days.
Then, this particular keyword can be replaced by one which played well in the month of July.
