Welcoming New Members to Your Site

Do you welcome all new members to your site, if so, how do you do it? Do you rely soley on an e-mail verification or do you have other means?

BTW, does anyone know of a module for phpnuke or postnuke that has an auto-welcome Private Message feature? I welcome all new members with a Private Message introducting them to the site and supplying some quick links to get them on their way faster. It would be nice to automate this process though, especially when more members start coming in.

My forum does verification and welcome by email but I usually try to welcome new people by posting a message in reply to their first post. Usually something like "welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay, if you have any problems feel free post to the site discussion or PM me"

Duke,
The welcoming email on your sites great, I think I will ask Ovi to find out how we can automate the welcome email on this site, I just don't know how to go about it :(

I welcome my mebers with an email auto, and also by a personal PM welcoming them, I think it is a nice touch.

That's what Duke does as well, it's a great touch and members REALLY appreciate that initial welcome to the site! Also we've taken to posting a thread welcoming the member, before they even post because more likely they will reply to a thread made for them, plus they are always very greatful to how welcoming we are!

I don't even notice them, most people probably don't even know what they are anyway.

We are wondering if there's a way to may the PM auto as well ;) looking for a script or something we can use to make this happen. Might have to write it ourselves if we can't.

OFF TOPIC:

Duke, please do me (you) a favor; nix the counters. Nobody cares.

Trust me.

Thanks

Are you talking about the counters on the right nav bar?

I tried it and ended up with scrip errors and don't want to put much time into it since I'll be converting to pn anyway.

Cool! So once you convert you won't be showing any site statistics on your main page?

Exactly.

I settled for that module in the beginning because it was the best one I could find, I never really liked it because it's way too big and takes up way too much real estate on the front page. If you want to see specifics, you can click on the stats link.

Sorry for the double post,

I will always try to show who's online on the front page. I'm not sure why it's so important to me, I guess I just like to see it there.

I've thought about it but I visit my sites all the time and really like to be able to view who's online from the main page. I guess I can limit it to my forums and just get used to it.

What you have to remember is that this was the first website that I ever built from the ground up. I had no idea about SEO, still only have the vaguest of ideas, advertising and revenue generation meant nothing to me, etc. Essentially, I was trying to add functionality to my site and do away with all the dead space.

I wasn't commenting on the counters from a SEO standpoint, just an overall site design view. I'm no one to be commenting on site design, but I do know counters are a big no no, unless it's a forum or a pornsite. lol
