What is google sandbox?

Sometimes i read "Google Sandbox" from some posting. Sorry to say that I have no clear idea about this. If anyone has clear idea please share with me. What is google sandbox?

Sandbox is a bad place to be. When your website is fresh and new and suddenly Google detects many backlinks (too many) pointing to your website, Google puts you into this bad place, very dark and nobody visit your website anymore until Google lets you out of this BOX

One of the cure for sandbox is not to point too many links to a new site too quickly, take it easy when building links for a new site.

no one knows anything abotu the sandbox, google keeps it a secret. everything is all gossip. it's to do with new sites though. I have sites with 200+ dircetry submissions that were new and they're all doing well in google.
