While just about everyone agrees that informed key phrase selection is at the core of effective SEO.

Whats your view?

I think it could be. But over concentrating and abusing the key phrase can get you penalized in my opinion.

What I have in mind is:

- too many keywords in the content of the page
- too many backlinks with that key phrase, but no variety

I agree. I have used directory submission software in the past, I paid $50.00 for it. But, after learning a bit more about how search engines treat identical anchor text and contextual text, I decide to try a different approach. Now, I hand submit my link. I don't use a preset anchor text, nor do I use a preset description. Every time I submit my link, I create new anchor text and descriptions. Albeit, similar in many ways to other links, hopefully it will produce better results. We shall see.

I briefly blogged about this last year Old Welsh Guy The Google Expert » What is King Content or Links ? . The thing is you se that without accurate keyword research everything else is wasted.

An example is a site we are working on at the moment, it is a transfer station that recycles material, including food waste which it changes into high quality compost. The keyword research has thrown up a little over 200 key phrases. Most of these are a walk in the park to optimise for as there is hardly any competition yet they will bring in traffic (my research has proven this via live Google data).

The link building will carry the correct anchor text FOR THE PAGE IT LINKS TO. Sending all your links to your homepage is seo suicide, especially if you have identical anchor text. Link TO and FROM the most relevant pages. Guys I can not stress this enough to you. A single dep link from an on topic page will boost your rankings in the SERP's no end.
