Why do Ad Networks teem with bots and how to deal with it?

Hello. It is not a secret that affiliate’s success in traffic monetization largely depends on the traffic source. Even if there is not so profitable offer, good traffic will bring revenues anyway. Whereas bad traffic will be profitless in any case, even if there is the most successful offer of any times.

For the majority of newbies in affiliate marketing, it is a revelation that most of the traffic they buy is bots. Many of them still think that every click bought from this or that ad platform is not fake. If you want to know why online advertising market is full of trash traffic and how to deal with it, read further.
-----

The Internet marketing of today gives those who have no idea about how to build a website a great opportunity to monetize traffic. Ad platforms and social networks enable each and everyone to attract a targeted audience to an advertised website. Essentially, online advertising market gives infinite possibilities of attracting the clients for any type of business.

In reality, not every newbie gets qualitative and targeted traffic for his sites, while buying advertisements from ad platforms. Why is that? The thing is that there is a lot of trash, fake and inappropriate traffic in the Internet marketing. And such kind of traffic constitutes the biggest part of what is being offered on the market. Trash traffic is called “scum”. And the truth is that more than 50% of all the amount of Internet traffic is bots, trash, and adult-traffic. And many of us buy this audience under the pretense of qualitative targeted traffic.

And it is senseless to struggle against it since you cannot “clean” all the traffic on the Internet. The whole industry of online advertising is built on sending and resending traffic flows from one ad platform to another one. These flows include botnets with billions of clicks of fake traffic on a daily basis. Besides, there are networks of "zombies" with infected devices which generate traffic. As for the quantity of adult traffic and its actual cost, I don’t even talk about it.

What am I going to say? Every day Internet-marketers buy billions of clicks of outright scum. Moreover, many mature affiliates do it on purpose.

How does trash traffic get into ad networks?

Most ad platforms, as far as they can, struggle against suppliers of low-quality traffic. As you can freely make fraud applications in CPA, the same way traffic suppliers dilute flows of real users with trash and bots. If an ad network blocks such a supplier, it will have no traffic at all.

In most cases, platforms themselves include botnets into its flows in order to sell more traffic per certain time unit. If there is demand, there should be supply. If there is no traffic for needed spot – you need to generate it.

Some of the ad networks 90% consist of only bots. It is enough to buy at least 20-30 thousands of cheap traffic from them and check it with good tracking software – and everything is clear.

Why do we have to buy scum-traffic?

Because we have no choice. Mature marketers know well that in any period of time there are always bots within traffic purchased. But if this traffic brings conversions – you have to put up with bots. Do you remember our manual related to “Making your first money on sweepstakes offers with redirect.com”? So, as it was exemplified in that case, I had to put up with bots every day. Thousands of similar fake clicks could be seen day by day, but the conversion was good, the profit was good, so I had to put up with bots’ presence on a daily basis. I am absolutely serious. You can ask any top marketer whether there are bots and trash traffic within his flows of purchased traffic. He would reply: “probably, there are, but it doesn’t disturb me really”.

Rules of the game are known not only to marketers themselves but to ad networks as well. In most relatively honest ad platforms you can expect money back (at least part of it), if you can prove distinctly the presence of bots within traffic purchased from them. They will react really adequately.

Now, the most important question: how to buy advertisements on the Internet, if there is more than a half of all the traffic is scum?

Firstly, use trackers and TDS. Every click of traffic needs to be verified with the help of tracking-soft and should be saved to a data base. The more parameters a tracker gets, the better it is. Collect IP-addresses, information about platforms, browsers, browsers’ language, OS, OS’ versions, browsers’ versions and user-agents. Modern botnets can pattern themselves on real clicks and they are able to change autonomously all the parameters which are monitored by a tracker. Nevertheless, such kind of activity complies with certain algorithms which can be detected easily.

Secondly, you can use the help of analytical services. You can supply all your prelanders with analytical plug-ins and you can detect bots according to user’s behavior.

Thirdly, you’d better create your own White Lists and Black Lists of ad platforms, IP-ranges of VPS and proxy-servers. Every type of traffic via proxy is considered to be suspicious. Avoid problems. By the way, you can read about the right way how to create White Lists and Black Lists in our next report.

Finally, do not work with those platforms where the traffic cost is nearly 1 cent per click. The cheaper the traffic is – there more bots are, as a rule. Though, it is quite possibly that good expensive traffic can consist of bots.
-----

Last but not the least. Remember, even if you have succeeded in clearing the traffic from bots and real clients are coming to your landing – there is a high possibility that the cheap adult-traffic, which has been purchased from adult ad-platform for a very low price, is being sent to your landing. Never believe the ad platforms’ advertisements and promises. ONLY TESTS will show the presence of real clients within your flow. No other twists and turns, analytical services, friends’ feedbacks, affiliate managers’ advice and etc. will show the real picture. Only testing and analysis with the help of trackers.

So, friends, if you really have decided to experience the whole gamut of Internet marketing, you’d better be ready for hardcore. Be patient. Good luck!

Excellent, @Anastasia AdCombo !

This will not only help a lot of people in general but also shows newbies what they have to do, that it is not necessarily that they're doing something wrong.

Thank you very much! Your feedback is really appreciated :)

We do our best to take care of affiliates and newbies as well with the help of such manuals since there are looot of information on the Internet, and it is rather difficult for a newbie to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information. So we try to share our own experience and knowledge and make Affiliate Marketing to flourish as an industry.
