.xxx adult TLD for the grown ups

.xxx, a sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD) targeted at the adult industry, has been given the initial go-ahead by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The first application by ICM Registry in 2000 was rejected but ICM seem to have managed to convince ICANN this time round.
ICM Registry will be responsible for the technical aspects of running the TLD. A non-profit organisation called the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR) will be in charge of regulating the domain. It is not clear at this stage exactly what level of regulation there will be, but it is expected to help in ensuring that unsuitable materials does but material involving or reaching minors seems to be a primary concern.

This is great news, as now we can simply block that extension automatically, while an adult search engine can accept just that domain.

OWG,
You placed a finger on one of the reasons the extension is being looked at favourable now, it will be very easy to filter this sites that use this extension

I don't think so Paul but it will be nice if all adult sites use this extension as this will help 'clean up' other TLD off adult site.

Does this mean all existing porn sites must switch over to the new .xxx extension?

No they will still be able to use any other extension. Also of note is that the .xxx domain name will cost more, if I remember correctly it's somewhere in the ballpark of $70+ a year, forget off the top of my head.

Well, then why would the porn dudes pay more for a .xxx domain? Will they now be required to register porn sites with the .xxx domain?

I'm confused.

I can't see why a webmaster would pay more for an xxx domain myself. Even if I had a pr0n site I'd rather have a .com or .net and sex up my sites name rather than pay more for an xxx extension.

Don't worry Paul, your not alone in your confusion.
