It can surely help you increase sales, when a customer comes onto your site you can then ask them to chat or let them come to you - but instead of waiting for a support ticket or contact via email then can speak to you live, so my answer would be yes.
Of course, it would be really helpful for increasing customers' experiences and thus help in increasing sales. I also think live messenger and social networking are both nice alternatives.
It can, but you also need to factor in that you have to be there at the computer ready to talk to new customers. Personally, I like running my business through email and PM as I don't want to stop every 10 minutes working on orders.
Yes live chat can help with increasing your business. Think about it... if somebody is on your website and is thinking about buying something but is not sure and has a few questions, they can contact live support and get their questions answered and can decide whether to buy or not.

Attention: "role based name" email prefixes such as support, webmaster, info, contact, forum, service, affiliate, admin, traffic, partners, marketing, etc., for our member accounts are not permitted. They are acceptable for a vendor listing, but not for the member email. This is due to bulk email processors scrubbing them for delivery due to extremely high bounce rates. Please apply for membership using a personalized email prefix. Something like bob@xxxxx.com.
If we discover you signed up with a role based name we will give you only one message to change it. After 3 days your account will be removed if the email is not changed.
