Dell is trying a second time to sell personal computers with Linux preinstalled, this time using the up-and-coming Ubuntu version of the open-source operating system.

At the end of May, the No. 2 PC maker will begin selling some consumer-focused laptop and desktop models with Ubuntu's new "Feisty Fawn" version of Linux installed, Dell spokesman Kent Cook said. The company announced the Linux move on Tuesday on its IdeaStorm site, launched in February to gather feedback directly from customers about what they want.

I need a laptop, one of the worlds biggest computer companies starts selling them with my favourite Linux distro... Its tempting, but, they're Dell Laptops! :( :D

I'm glad Dell decided to do this finally and I think Ubuntu is a great choice, but when it comes to laptops I prefer HP and Acer.

Come to think of it, I am not sure Dell is cheaper than other makes. By the time postage cost etc is added, its the same price as say HP or other brands.
I have the fact that you cannot just walk to them and dump you PC if its now working, you have to stay at home and wait for some pacel delivery guy to collect it etc etc
That is why I will never buy a Dell

Dell's PCs are 20% or even more expensive here in Croatia than other brands.
In fact only PCs, avaliable here, that cost more than Dells are Apple's computers.

We have never had any issues with Dell PC's, never tried there laptops.

Sometimes they can be idiots about customisation though.

Are Dell in Croatia available in shops or only through mail order from Dell? In UK you cannot buy Dell in shops, you can only order via the Internet or their website.

They are available in 2 shops. Croatia has hundreds of PC shops, but Dell are available only in 2 of them.

Dell don't sell to shops. If they're available in shops, the company is buying them and then selling them on. (Probably why they are expensive then ;))

Actually in Croatia they do. I just checked. That's the only way you can buy them here. Through Dell dealers. And I was wrong. Not 2 shops but 3 shops.

Probably the case Scott but its probably something stupid within Dell itself.

Microsoft Vista costs have the price in the US then it does here in the UK. Do you know what Bill Gates response was to that you asked in an interview? He said the price difference was because of the the exchange rate.

If you think about it though, £1 = almost $2.

Vista is costing approx £400 here and in the US its approx $200, shoudn't the price be the other way around???

Personally I think these companies increase their prices in certain countries because they know they can make more money.

Wait a sec! What's the price tag on Vista Home Premium or Vista Ultimate in the UK?
I'd like to compare the prices.

lol, it was an example the premium and vista prices vary from between £200 - £400 in the uk.

You can pick them up a lot cheaper in the US.

I know it was an example and I know the price in US.
I wanted to compare the UK price with the price in Croatia.

Here in Croatia you can get Vista Home Premium for £90 and Ultimate for £150.

I hate Dell laptops. But Dell Servers and desktops are very reliable.
