Hi everyone I'm a complete newby so here goes. What software is best for long term developement of web sites. MS frontpage or Dreamweaver. Also I'm thinking of starting a Learndirect course to get qualified in some way, is this a good way or is a full time college course bettter? [/FONT]

Welcome to UK webmaster world. Most professional web developers use Dreamweaver, its much more advanced than FrontPage, though FrontPage is quite good for beginners. If you have the time and opportunity, attending web development classes at your local continuing education centre or collect is much better than distant learning, there is opportunity to interact with other students and rub sparks of one another. However if you do not have the time or a college running web development course is not available near you, distant learning such as learn direct can be a good alternative.

Dreamweaver is awesome, I simply love it. If you want a crash course, just copy the source from a site you like, paste it in dreamweaver and start manipulating code then view it in a browser window. You can also specify a main and secondary browser which is helpful given the differences between Firefox and IE.
I have Macromedia Studio MX and I use it daily but I do wish it had XHTML.

Dreamweaver is superb, and you can also buy cheap interactive CD roms on Ebay to show you the basics via video CD

Dreamweaver has my vote. I made my first site only using Dreamweaver and a HTML book.

Dreamweaver definately. I learned HTML with notepad before using any other software. I tried Front Page first and it tried to do everything for me and created a lot of IE-only code and I didn't feel like I had full control of the site which I found really annoying.
In comparison Dreamweaver was like a breath of fresh air. Although it has a lot of advanced functions, they don't get in the way if you don't want to use them and creating a basic website is very straighforward, with easy access to edit the HTML if you want.

yeah, I'd have to say dreamweaver again, tose to be honest I've used both and they both have advantages/disadvantages. I think frontpage is easier for beginners.
