It's a kind of posts that is very targeted.

Okay, after some quick checking, it seems that FB's dark posts are news stream ads that can be segmented for geos, split-testing and so on. The benefit is that your slew of ads and testing does not show up in your own news feed and cause your followers to blindly bang the unfriend button. Your ads appear only where you target them to.

FB calls these unpublished posts. I don't know where the name dark posts came from.

As far as I could ascertain, they came into use circa 2014.
