I am not sure exactly how this works but if you have a read only link you can distribute it (or share it) through some media; like web (sites or social media posts), IM or email. Googlebot must be following where it finds the link.
Be aware that at anytime Googlebot may be instructed not to index the googledocs links --this may be seen by google as just an exploit. "make hay while the sun shines"
