Or you need to put some money into paid traffic

There are many options. Search Engine optimization, Social media, YouTube, Paid Advertisement, referral programs, email marketing, and so much more. Also how long you have been online helps in improving your traffic.

Search Engine optimization: You can hire a SEO Professional to do that for you or you can do it by yourself.
Social Media: You have to either put ads on any of the social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc, or participate in groups that relate to your niche.

Youtube: You can create helpful videos about your niche.

Referral programs: You can offer a percentage back to others to bring you traffic, but that only works if your project offers membership.

Email marketing: Email marketing works best in my opinion, for retaining already had members. I don't propose cold emailing but people do it.
