It feels like @Sbrown2001 is trying to find out if Affiliate Marketing could be something for him.
I would say: Have a look around Steven, learn our vocabulary (every trade has its own) and then see if this business could work for you. The possibilities are immense, its too easy to get lost in it all...
Choose a route and stick to it (backup plans are fine)... So many people wander between so many options to never ever succeed in whatever they intended to do...

Life is too short to spend it feeling miserable and this industry is so full of options and opportunities that many new to it get quickly overwhelmed. So, focus and start with the basics, build from there.

I always like to recommend that newbies start with these threads:

WIKI (START HERE) (lingo/terminology, definitions, tools you need, etc.)
Newbie Helpdesk (newbie questions and concerns, challenges)

Anytime you have a question or need help, just start a thread to let us know.

Now it's time to get organized with a plan

1. What are you trying to achieve? (specific amount + date)
2. What niche will you promote?
3. What's your traffic source?
4. Which affiliate network/program will you work with?
5. How much time are you committing?
6. What EXACTLY will you spend that time doing?

Just answering those 6 questions can focus you
Then you need to ACT, and carry out your plan

It's also VERY important to keep learning
Keep poking around and stay curious
You don't need to go overboard, but become expert level in your software and system
Everything is changing all the time

• Software changes
• Regulation changes
• User behavior changes
• How we transact changes

Be positive, you are still in the game
You have found what doesn't work, so you'll not repeat it
