Sub-domain can be ranked but it should be sub-niche of your main site. Otherwise, there will be a conflict.

A subdomain is a part of your website separate from the rest of your sitemap ...

You would just spllt your rankings on the same domain -- bad idea.
Buy a new domain for that however you could hobble your well ranked domain too.
Conclusion: waste of time if you are in the page 1 (top ten) now.
Scale by the same methods with a related keyphrase seems a better option.
