There's definitely still money to be made in that industry. I actually know someone that became very rich from it.
Paid services simply have a higher status than free services. If people have the money and are desperate to find someone then they will pay for the service to make sure they make the most out of their time instead of just messing around with free places.
Free and paid are different niches, it is just a matter of identifying where they spend their time online in contrast to the ones that are looking for free sites.
Identify your target and personalize your brand according to their needs. Always provide the value that a paid site should have over a free one and you will be good.
