Links are an integral part of SEO, in fact, I would go as far as saying link building is 50% of any SEO strategy/campaign.
The way I build links is write 6 different titles (anchor) and 6 different descriptions.
When you submit to directories or whatever method you choose, this will be seen as more natural to the search engines.
Lets say you want to rank for SEO. You wouldn't go out right away and get 1000 back links all containing SEO as the title/anchor because you'd be flagged right away by Googles system and dumped in the "sandbox".
You'd go out and get a few that have the title SEO then mix and match like Organic SEO, Advanced SEO etc etc.
Use your keyword in them but be smart about how you write the titles.
