How do i get a website up and running and what should i have on my website?
Should it be only the products i'm promoting or should it all be about my niche and include the products that i'm promoting within my website.

Have a blog going and a fan page on facebook to drive some traffic to my blog where i have links to the products that im promoting. Is that the right direction and if not what way do i need to go and if so what else can i do to get better?

Thank you all for you time and advice

Well that's a big question. I could write a book to answer but the answers may not be right for you.

It's kind of like you asked "how do you build a house?" The answer is - it depends. What's your budget, what style, how many square feet, etc. etc. Without knowing all that we could maybe explain how to build the WRONG type of house.

So you need to 1st decide on your niche (that's your foundation), then zero in a little about what type of site you think you want. Tell us a little about your goals and then we can give you a better idea.

1st - very important - go through the pick your niche exercises in the niche forum. You need to be sure you have a GOOD niche and the niche can partly determine what type of site, etc.

2nd read all the stickies in the newbie forum. This will help you learn what to avoid and what others have found to be successful.

3rd - then start a new thread explaining your niche, your goals, ideas you've read about that you think are the direction you want to go in and we can give you more specific advice.

Blogging is generally a good way to make money, however, you have to do your keyword research right - if you fail there, you will fail entirely.

Don't be scared by my strong words, though. Keyword research is not as hard as many people tend to think. Use your common sense while choosing buying keywords and optimize your site accordingly.

Review type sites are great. Don't "sell" your visitors anything, rather provide your personal opinion and vindicate them by good reasons why you think the particular product rocks.

As for Facebook, you should certainly create a fan page there, however, strive to be seen everywhere, on Twitter, on FB, other social networks. Also, when creating backlinks, try to use as many sources as possible.

blogs, articles, forums would definitely help you to promote your website and drive more traffic to you.. you should also consider using cpcs, cpms... check out some of the companies: 7search, adknowledge, miva, plexious, miva...

"Have a blog going and a fan page on facebook to drive some traffic to my blog"

An interesting concept. I was relying on google organic serach only, and just recently made a facebook page which directs people back to my site, but am finding it difficult getting LIKES on facebook to make this worthwhile.

I pondered about making a blog, but if no one reads it, whats the point? then you have to spend just as much time promoting your blog as you do your site, unless of course your site is mostly about the blog. I have been told that the major value of a blog is that it gets google to come back to your site regularly and may help boost rankings (google hates stagnant sites ..

but I am still trying to find the best blog platform for joomla ...

still, got to be in it to win it ..

You all have some great ideas, and I'd like to add my own as well.

Creating a blog first and foremost is the best way to start. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. Buy a domain, get it hosted somewhere and use Wordpress CMS. Write a new post at least once a week, and guest blog on other people's sites on a regular basis. Myblogguest.com is a great resource for that. When guest blogging, write original blogs that cater to their visitors, not yours. Based on their guidelines and policies, insert a link with the right anchor text back to your blog. Search engines will smile, and you'll start getting a little traffic.
