I really do not believe that there is such a thing as a hot domain extension.
Let me explain why I think that.
I helped the company I worked for apply for a new gTLD.
In the end, we were granted the name string as a registry by ICANN.
That is a long complicated story that I won't get into.
However, during the application process, I did a lot of research on our desired "string" (the name extension applied for).
I found that it really was not that critical as far as offering some advantage in the
name string itself for SEO or the like in the end, that's after we spent a million
dollars plus getting the application approved.
I still like the idea of the meaning invoked by the domain extension, unfortunately Google really
doesn't give a shit. Even though Google applied for so many new gTLD names through their own registry division.
In fact Google came to us requesting that we give them one of their names that had no trademark for one
of their products. In other words, the domain name was a generic word.

No, the company was spending in excess of $1 million a year on Google ads back then and the CEO was furious that they would not pay the reserved name price we had set for that name or even make a counter offer. I forget the amount, IIRC it was in the $3K -$5K range. Google was just being a total pig --like they were entitled ...

Focus on .COM when your core business in general industry. Or use local extension (ccTLD ) if you plan to reach local customers in certain city or countries
While the dot com extension will likely always be the go to domain extension, hot domains really don't exist for a few reasons. For one thing, there are well over 1,000 domain extensions in total. While there are only 316 ccTLDs, the more accurate number would be 1,000 if you include second-level domain names like . co.nz, . com.au and so on, listed in the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) Root Zone Database around the world giving you way too many options for your next domain name.
Before the number grew so large, we would buy every available extension for our businesses just to prevent anyone from registering a domain with our domain name and to prevent anyone from piggy backing on our domain authority or using there domain to steal link juice, SEO, or typing errors in the address bar.
No one buys them all anymore, unless you're a Microsoft, Google, FB, etc.

One trick is to find short names in the new gTLDS where the .com version is parked for sale at a ridiculous price.
I have one name 5 char pronounceable in mobile voice in .com, .cam and .vip with open trademarks --I may just try to sell them as a group for low 5 figures this year. Or, do what I have planned for them: a livecams broadcast network as a DAO, +adult sex oriented social media + a DAO connected affiliate program for the brand.

I used to "bank" them and "warehouse" them in the early days. It was a good side gig for many of us back then. Where I once held hundreds, I am now down to a few dozen. I don't have any more "5's" but I still have a few "7's". I also have quite a few theme based longtails for some planned projects. They tend to benefit significantly in the various rankings (title, content, domain).

- .xyz - Gaining traction as a versatile and modern extension, appealing to startups and innovative brands.
- .store - Ideal for e-commerce websites, this extension highlights online retail and shopping.
