What is Mobile Friendly Update and how it works?

Look at your website on a SmartPhone;

• Does it render right?
• Can you read the text?
• Does the page load in 2 or 3 seconds?
• Check with both your WI-FI and LTE ...
  
• Look for emulators that do these same things from the locations that you will be marketing too also.
• Don't forget to empty your mobile browser cache and/or is a Incognito/Privacy browser window.

As far as the mechanics: the indexing robot sends a user-agent header that says it is a certain (selected) smartphone model --your webserver responds with the screen modifications in the media query of the CSS.
