What should be the ideal guidelines for a web directory?

Sometimes I got some emails and PMs in many forums from the newcomer of this business regarding the guidelines of an Ideal Web Directory. I replied them many times. I am giving an example to help the new comer in this link directory business.

Guidelines:

• No more Gambling, sports betting, horse and greyhound racing and betting related or affiliated sites.
• Submit only web sites offering unique content.
• Be as specific as possible regarding the location of your site.
• No adult sites or adult related content.
• No sites broken links.
• No illegal sites containing copyright destruction, violence, fraud, child pornography, racism, vulgarity or warez.
• Do not submit subfolder - use the top-level domain or maximum sub domain.
• Including product pricing and special offers. These are subject to change and are therefore not accepted.
• Submit only web sites in English.
• Submit your web sites to the single most relevant category.
• Do not submit duplicated sites.
• Inappropriate CAPITALIZATI0N of words.
• Do not include prices or offers.
• Keyword Stuff is not allowed.

Most of the common guidelines already Rakib mentioned , thanks for your work rakib . ( Both of our native language is Bangli, so writing quality of us is not up to the mark, I expect all will pardon us :).


if some one is really new , he'd better learn from experts , go to dmoz, yahoo , take a look how they organise sites.

When u add any site in any category ask yourself , does the site really fit in the category, do you think the visitors will find the site really useful, for such site do you think visitors will look in the category you are adding it

if needed create new category with proper description which sites you expect here ,

any one can also consider the following guidelines:

Submission Guide lines:
Please read before submitting.
Deep links are permitted Listings are sorted by PR.
Sites in English only will be reviewed.
Submit your web site to the most relevant category.
Your site cannot be "Under Construction" Your site cannot be redirected the visitors to another site.
Do not include URLs in the description field. (e.g. www.mysite.com).
Do not submit mirror sites that have same content, but different URLs.
Do not submit links to pornographic sites or web sites that have links or banners that lead to pornographic web sites.
Sites consisting mainly of affiliate links are not accepted.
Sites developed just for earning revenue from AdSense advertisements will not be included.
Sites with poor design and with lot of advertisements in it, will not be accepted Submissions that contain fields in all UPPER CASE or all lower case will not be accepted.
Submissions in Top Level Categories are allowed for Featured Listings only.
Free submissions will be reviewed within 2 to 4 WEEKS or when time permits.
Paid submissions will be reviewed within 24 to 48 hours.
Attention! Sites submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories will be removed.
We reserve the right to post, modify or delete any information submitted.

Your guideline are very nice but I think if guideline are too long, people will not read it.
I think about 4 or 5 lines with the most important guidliness will have maximum effect.
