I've used BitDefender, Kaspersky and ESET.
I found BitDefender and Kaspersky to be heavy on resources so I switched to ESET.
It's rather cheap too. Use it on all my PC's.

Avast is the best among free ones. Bitdefender is the best paid one. I also recommend instaling malwarebytes and spybot search and destroy every few months. Use them in safe mode to delete all the viruses and then delete them again.

Avast can't be considered the best free one anymore nor can Bitdefender be the best paid one.
