What is cloaking?

Cloaking is the art of differentiating a user / real human from a bot - thus driving traffic accordingly.
For example, let's say you wanna set an Adwords campaign for some of your affiliate products, however, Google doesn't allow driving traffic to the affiliate url itself - and if you do so - your account will get suspended. So...you cloak. you use a software that can detect whether the user who clicked your ad is a Google Adwords bot / human reviewer etc. or a real user that can earn you money. The more accurate and data-updated a cloaker software is, the more expensive it is.

Cloaking is the search engine optimization technique in which the content presented to the crawler is different from that presented to the user's browser. It is an illegal practice and also considered black hat SEO.

welcome to the past -- show me one example that works more than a week today ...
welcome to the world of SEO fiction ...

  • a search engine's indexing robot is not a blinded web browser like you use.
  • a search engine's indexing robot gets the headers of every HTTP request it makes and see all the rewrites or redirects.
  • a search engine's indexing robot downloads your java scripts and analyzes them as text.
  • a search engine's indexing robot will use different IP address spaces and omit or falsify the user-agent name -- googlebot may not tell you it is googlebot. Or if suspicious, they will use proxies to evade your simplistic tricks.

If you want to see cloaking in action, use China's search engine, Baidu.... 50% of my searches there are always end up with cloaked results....

In cloaking, the search engine and the user are literally not on the same page. Therefore, both the user and the search engine are being deceived.

Cloaking in Simplified way

Cloaking takes a user to other sites than he or she expects by disguising those sites' true content. During cloaking, the search engine spider and the browser are presented with different content for the same Web page. HTTP header information or IP addresses assist in sending the wrong Web pages. Searchers will then access websites that contain information they simply were not seeking, including pornographic sites. Website directories also offer up their share of cloaking techniques.

Many of the larger search engine companies oppose cloaking because it frustrates their users and does not comply with their standards. In the search engine optimization (SEO) industry, cloaking is considered to be a black hat technique that, while used, is frowned on by most legitimate SEO firms and Web publishers. Getting caught cloaking can result in huge penalties from the search engines, including being removed from the index altogether
